Residents of any age who live within the boundaries of the cities of Bedford, Bedford Hts., Walton Hills and Oakwood Village, OH., who are temporarily or permanently disabled, chronically ill, or homebound may qualify. This service enables people unable to shop and/or prepare adequate meals for themselves to maintain or resume independent living in their own homes.
New applicants to our Meals on Wheels program are asked to pay $4/meal. For those with low income, our Meals on Wheels Angel Fund may help subsidize the cost of meals. For seniors 60 and over who meet the qualifications, free federal meals (Title III) are provided by Maple Hts. Senior Center or Rose Center for Aging Well, delivered by our volunteers. These nutritionally balanced meals following the guidelines of the Westen Reserve Area Agency on Aging, have been approved for all seniors, including those requiring a low-carb or low-salt diet. In order to be accepted into the Older Americans Act (Title III) program, a social worker must assess the abilities of each recipient for inclusion in this program There are a limited number of spaces available and our clients are placed on a waiting list until a space is available. Its not unusual to wait several months before there is an opening. Meanwhile new applicants often consider pay-as-you-go until there is an opening available.
You bet they do. The kitchens that serve our Meals program prepare “comfort food” meals which our seniors are familiar with. A typical weekly menu might include hot meals like manicotti with sauce, stuffed peppers, lemon chicken, paprikash and noodles, homemade soup/sandwich, cold plate: chicken, tuna, egg salad; rolls, butter, sometimes breakfast of sausage, French toast, butter & syrup, fresh fruit, milk, snacks. or a juicy hamburger with condiments. For those requiring a special diet, we coordinate with Ahuja Medical Center/University Hospitals to obtain renal diets, soft food diets, low-salt, low-carb or allergy free diets tailored to one’s needs.
